Rovers on the road again

Tuffley Rovers will head out on the road for the second time in their Uhlsport Hellenic League, Premier Division season, as they make the trip to face another Gloucestershire side, Fairford Town on Wednesday evening.

After collecting a valuable point from their last away game, a 0-0 draw at Brimscombe & Thrupp on the opening day of the season, Rovers played twice at home in the league, succumbing to a 3-1 defeat last week against Malvern Town, before beating Lydney Town by a convincing 4-0 margin on Saturday.

After struggling to score goals last season, with just forty league goals all season, Neil Mustoe’s squad have already netted five times in three games, with Jack Beardsell and Mason Lewis both scoring twice on Saturday. There is also improvement in the defensive record, with just three goals conceded, to date (all against Malvern Town), and two clean-sheets in three league appearances for new ‘keeper Elliot Jones.

Mustoe will face some familiar faces when he heads over to Cinder Lane on Wednesday, with several former Gloucester City players in the hosts’ dug-out, including Jamie Reid and Jamie Randall. Fairford Town will also have Rich Cox, Mustoe’s predecessor at Rovers, in their coaching team, whilst their squad is likely to feature several former Rovers, including Ross Langworthy, Jamal Lawrence, Aaron Basford and Josh Swales.

Wednesday evening’s game will kick-off at 7:45pm and Fairford Town have confirmed admission rates as £6 (£4 concessions).

Rovers expecting heat as Lydney come to town

After two consecutive defeats against sides who both hold ambitions for Southern League football in 2023/24, Tuffley Rovers will be looking to record a first win of the season when they host fellow Gloucestershire side Lydney Town on Saturday afternoon.

Last Saturday’s Emirates FA Cup EPR defeat was followed by a 3-1 reverse against Malvern Town in midweek, but Rovers put up a good fight in both games, off the back of a creditable 0-0 draw with Brimscombe & Thrupp on the opening day of the season, and Neil Mustoe’s side will go into their latest Uhlsport Hellenic League fixture in confident mood.

The game is likely to be played in incredibly hot conditions, with temperatures expected to peak at 35 degrees Celsius during the game, with high levels of humidity also playing their part. FA guidance issued this week is recommending that there are water breaks at fifteen minute intervals, to help players in combating the conditions.

As ever, the Tuffley Rovers match-day programme will be available on the turnstiles, as well as being published online.

Rovers look to home comforts

After the agony of a late, late defeat in the Emirates FA Cup, Extra Preliminary Round on Saturday, when Slimbridge scored twice in injury time to win 2-1, Neil Mustoe’s Tuffley Rovers will return to Hellenic League Premier Division action on Tuesday evening, in the first home league fixture of 2022/23.

The visitors will be one of the favourites for the Hellenic League title, Malvern Town, who will arrive at Glevum Park off the back of an opening day draw with Westfields last Tuesday, and then an FA Cup victory on Saturday, when they won 2-1 against Worcester City; a game played out in front of a crowd of 895!

Sammie Hicks, Dominik Kent and Yeshaya Lomotey should return to the squad, after missing Saturday’s defeat, but Liam Wright, Liam Smith and Ashley Davies are all likely to be unavailable, with only Wright having appeared this season, in the 0-0 draw at Brimscombe & Thrupp.

Following the increased admission rates applied for the FA Cup tie on Saturday, the usual fees will apply on Tuesday evening (7:45pm KO), which will be £5 Adults, £3 Concessions and U15s free. Season tickets are valid for the fixture.

Slimbridge visit as Rovers dream of cup glory

Tuffley Rovers will welcome Slimbridge AFC to Glevum Park today (3pm KO) hoping to secure a memorable victory and the opportunity to advance to the Preliminary Round of the 2022/23 Emirates FA Cup.

There will be some familiar faces in the opposition line-up, with former Rovers Joe Shutt, Jacob Geddes, Ben Prictor and Toby Lawrence all named in the provisional Slimbridge squad. Shutt and Geddes will be making their first competitive appearances for the visiting Swans, who will arrive at Glevum Park looking to improve on a record of exiting the competition at the first round (entered) in four of the past five years.

Rovers have a similarly disappointing record in recent years, having failed to make it past the Extra Preliminary Round in four of the last six seasons. Last season they did manage to make it past that stage, winning 3-2 at Windsor, before losing to Flackwell Heath after a Preliminary Round replay.

The Extra Preliminary Round tie will kick-off at 3pm at Glevum Park. Just a reminder to Rovers supporters that season tickets are not valid for the FA Cup tie and admission rates on Saturday will be £7 (Adult/Standard), £4 (Concessions) and £2 Children (Under 15).

Bright start at Brimscombe – now for the magic of the FA Cup

Neil Mustoe’s Tuffley Rovers side travelled to The Meadow on Wednesday evening and returned with a valuable league point, in the opening week of the Hellenic League season, from a 0-0 draw with Brimscombe & Thrupp.

Dom Kent went closest to scoring for The Rovers, only to be denied by an excellent save from Gavin Jones in the Brimscombe goal, but clear chances were few and far between, in a game keenly contested but where the two defensive units were very much on top.

With our first league fixture of the season completed, attention now turns to our Emirates FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round tie with Slimbridge AFC this Saturday, which promises to be a big day for the club.

Admission rates have been agreed between the two clubs, as is required for FA competitions, as follows:

Standard Adult admission                                      £7

Concessionary admission (O65s or ages 15-17) £4

Children (U15s)                                                        £2

Just a reminder that season tickets are not valid for FA Cup, FA Vase or FA Youth Cup ties played at Glevum Park during 2022/23.

We are very grateful to former player Peter Thomas, who is Saturday afternoon’s match sponsor through his excellent local public house The Pike & Musket.
